Garden Tour: Drake Hill Flower Bridge
The Old Drake Hill Bridge in Simsbury was originally designed and built in 1892 as a one lane, one way bridge over the Farmington River. It was replaced by a two lane bridge in 1992, but the old bridge was retained for pedestrian use and placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1996, volunteer groups began to develop community gardens on and around the historic bridge. The 48 flower boxes, 32 hanging baskets and other gardens that exist today are still planted and maintained throughout the warm months by a dedicated group of volunteers.
